5th Annual Americana Workshop for Kids Recap
Our theme moved from our Flag’s history to the beautiful and varied National Parks (63) that are protected in America by our national park service. Three videos were shown to our 10 young people showing the history of our National Park Service and the poet who penned the anthem “America the Beautiful”. We sang along as we played the anthem. Co-chair David Solvastad introduced the first chapter of the guidebook that each participant was given. The calm mind in action & hacks to prepare anyone to keep calm in a stressful situation.
The kids then were divided into 3 groups to learn about compass use basics, design their own T-shirts & bookmarks to keep, how to collect and purify water to identify 3 edible weeds and finally basic first aid to treat scratches and small cuts. They were brave enough to try dandelion root tea. Huge thanks to the Elk members who made this workshop a success: Trisha Bourier, Gerry Gallo, Diane Marvin, Arancha Rothman, Rhonda Stebner, David Solvastad and Cheryl Gousse who prepped food for our luncheon
The Thrivent Financial action team grant obtained covered the expense of compasses, whistles, books, string bags and flashlights that each participant received for free. One parent who stayed to listen shared this comment, “That was very informative. Thanks!
You’re welcome,
