3rd Annual Americana Workshop - Recap

This year’s theme for the Americana Workshop for Kids was Symbols of America. We continued to teach the history of our American Flag by sharing back stories from Benjamin Franklin and his quirky connection to the Gadsden Flag to Robert Heft, a teenager who designed our present-day flag.

Other symbols were brought to light by showing videos on the building of the Statue of Liberty to Bald Eagle fun facts. Using a magnifying glass each participant examined a dollar bill and the mottos that are hidden within and their meaning; then they got to keep it.

Arts & crafts were sprinkled between the lessons, from designing their own T-shirt to creating a patriotic cookie to bring home.

Finally, we retired a worn flag as we learned the meaning of the stars, stripes and colors. Each participant was given a paper with a state name of the original 13 colonies and an individual stripe. When their state was called their flag strip was tossed into the fire. A parting tote for each child contained the Elk Flag Booklet, 12 value cards & much more. A good time was had by all instilling what patriotism is an how one lives out those values every day.

I want to thank all the volunteers that made this year’s workshop a success. Cheryl Gousse, Rhonda Stebner, Diane Marvin, Holly & Jake Jacobs, David Svalestad., Patti Spencer, Dorothy Nichols, Nancy Sheridan, Chandra Bryzinski, Hollu June Jacobs, ER, Jake Jacobs, Gerry Gallo, PER, and Steve Corcoran.
